The Effects Of Stress On Our Skin

Some days, it feels like stress is the new calm.


With our exposure to an influx of mental and emotional stressors - COVID-19, social media, the toxic nature of “hustle culture” - as well as physical stressors, including environmental pollutants and other free-radicals, stress is unavoidable in our society. 


But how does all that stress effect our skin?

How Stress Effects Our Skin

Cortisol is the primary stress hormone in our bodies, and has a huge impact on our skin when it’s levels are thrown off balance or increased (aka, we get stressed). For one, it can lead to an excess in oil production of the glands near our hair follicles, worsening acne in the process. Another indicator that our cortisol levels have increased is when pre-existing skin conditions, such as psoriasis or eczema, appear more aggravated or flare up.


Those who live with chronic stress are more susceptible to cellular aging (a la, premature fine lines and wrinkles) as a result of daily stressors. As such, stress can also induce early signs of aging.


Our routines may also get the brunt of our stress, too. Proper steps taken that would normally help to ease the symptoms of a pre-existing skin condition (i.e. a well-balanced diet, consistent exercise, a proper skincare routine) may fall by the wayside if someone is stressed.



How To Decrease Stress
